Hispanic Heritage Month

According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulate “HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH celebrates the traditions and cultures of all Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.”

Según la Embajada y Consulado de Estados Unidos “El Mes del Legado Hispánico celebra las tradiciones y culturas de todos los americanos que tienen raíces de España, México y naciones de Centro América, Sur América y el Caribe que hablan español”

Being Hispanic myself I did not know about it until this year. And it was quite interesting to know there is a month that celebrates traditions from different cultures. This year on Mexico’s Independence Day we were mourning family members that COVID took from us. So, I didn’t feel like celebrating anything.

Siendo Hispana no sabía que esto existía hasta este año. Y la verdad se me hizo muy interesante el saber que hay una fecha dedicada a celebrar las tradiciones de otras culturas.

Celebrating our Hispanic Heritage

However, I wanted to do something special to celebrate my heritage and get Elena excited about it as well. I miss Mexico everyday and I want my daughter to embrace her Mexican heritage as we have embraced all the traditions from her birthplace since we are living here. And for me there is no better way to teach someone something than being an example.

Sin embargo, quería hacer algo especial para celebrar mi legado hispano y para que Elena se emocionara por el suyo también. Extraño México todos los días y quiero que mi hija acepte sus raíces mexicanas, como nosotros hemos adoptado las tradiciones del lugar donde ella nació ya que aquí estamos viviendo. Y para mí no hay mejor forma de enseñar algo que con el ejemplo.

For instance, If she sees that I feel proud of where I come from. If at home, we only speak Spanish. And I if make the delicious food we usually eat in Mexico she will have a piece of that heritage on her. Hopefully enough to be pass thru generations.

Si ella ve que me siento orgullosa de donde vengo. Si en la casa hablamos español y si en casa cocinamos la comida que generalmente comemos en México, ella adoptará esa parte de su legado. Y tengo la esperanza de que sea suficiente como para que ella lo siga transmitiendo a la siguiente generación.

Mexican Heritage Photoshoot

Therefore, I decided to do a Mexican Inspired photoshoot. Many years on ballet and folklore taught me a thing or two. So, I looked into my closet and grabbed one of my favorite shawls. Lucky Elena had a beautiful dress her aunt brought her from Oaxaca, so we were set. Now I only needed a location.

Por lo tanto, decidí hacer una sesión de fotos mexicanas. Mis años en el ballet y folklore me enseñaron una que otra cosa. Así que busqué en mi closet y tomé mi chal favorito. Y afortunadamente Elena tenía un hermoso vestido que le trajo su tía desde Oaxaca, así que estábamos listas. Ahora lo único que me hacía falta era el lugar para las fotos.

Embracing where we are

Living in the desert I had to take advantage of my surroundings and what better setting that some prickly pear cactus. After all they are part of the Mexican flag. And to add a little more flare I bought some flower to wear on my hair.

Viviendo en el desierto, tenia que aprovechar mis alrededores y que mejor que unos nopales de fondo para acentuar el toque mexicano. Eso y unas flores en el cabello fueron el toque final para la sesión.

I must say I was so happy with the result, my hubby totally killed it with the pictures. Hope you like them as well. Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15. And, Viva Mexico!
