First Time in Disneyland with a Toddler

Spring Break is here, so I thought it would be a good idea to share some tips for your next trip to Disneyland. Last year we were brave enough (or crazy) to take our first trip to Disneyland as a family of three. We figured that the best time to go would be when Elena turned two. Certainly this way she would be aware of what is going on around her. Most importantly by this time she was familiar with Mickey and the gang.

Above all due the fact that she gets to enter for free. This was an amazing saving, henve we only bought two grown up tickets with the Max pass. Which I highly recommend for family pictures around the park, that are send straight to your phone on the Disney app. they have Disney photographers on special spots around the park taking your picture.

Disney como familia de tres

Las vacaciones de Semana Santa se acercan, así que decide compartir con ustedes algunos consejos por si tienen planeado visitar Disneyland. El año pasado fue la primera vez que fuimos a Disneyland como familia de tres. Así que decidimos que el mejor momento seria una vez que elena cumpliera 2 años. Así ella estará mas consciente de lo que esta pasando a su alrededor, y para entonces ya estaba familiarizada con Mickey y los demás personajes.

Ademas de que hasta los 2 años no pagan boleto de entrada, lo cual significa un gran ahorro, de esta manera solo compramos dos boletos de adultos con el Max Pas. Lo cual recomiendo ampliamente ya que de esta manera es más fácil tener fotos familiares de buena calidad, ya que alrededor del parque en puntos estratégicos hay fotógrafos de Disney. Los cuales toman tu foto, y automáticamente la recibes en tu teléfono con la App de Disneyland.

Where we stayed

Meanwhile we started searching for a hotel within walking distance from Disneyland. Most importantly to take Elena for a nap when need it, in addition we wanted to get there a day before, so we could get a good night sleep. In the past when we traveled we tried to get up super early and go to our destination. However this was a gamble, some trips would be good others cranky, so we didn’t want to chance it.

We booked at the Fairfield by Marriott Anaheim Resort. We made reservation for two nights, and got a ticket for the one day single park. This hotel was a good choice, the price is pretty similar to all the hotels within walking distance from Disneyland. Moreover the room was comfortable with a  king bed and a sofa bed, another great thing about it is that they have mini fridge that we used to stock up with Elena’s snacks and a small bottle of milk for her.

Donde nos Hospedamos

Así que unos meses antes empezamos a buscar hotel, estábamos buscando un hotel del cual pudiéramos irnos caminando al parque y que nos quedaríamos dos noches, aunque solamente íbamos a estar en el parque un día. Ya que por experiencias en viajes anteriores sabíamos que Elena se pone de mal humor si la levantas temprano y la subes al carro por varias horas. Y en esta ocasión no queríamos arriesgarnos a tener una niña malhumorada antes de empezar a explorar el parque.

Al final hicimos nuestra reservación en Fairfield by Marriott Anaheim Resort, sabíamos que era un poco más caro porque estaba cerca de Disney, pero queríamos tener la facilidad de poder salir a que tomara su siesta y regresar sin involucrar carro. El precio del hotel era muy similar a todo los que estaban a esa distancia de Disney, y la habitación estaba acogedora con una cama King size y un sofá cama, también tenían mini refrigerador, el cual usamos para guardar los snacks que compramos para Elena.

Where we ate

Goofy’s Kitchen

As a result of being near Disney a day before, we made a reservation to Goofy’s Kitchen, which is one of the restaurants at Disneyland Hotel. Honestly before this trip I didn’t know I could eat at the hotel restaurant even thought I was not staying there. Certainly this was a great warm up for the next day since, in the restaurant they have characters, that go to your table and say hi. that way I feel that we prepared her for what it was going to be like the next day.

We got to say hi to Goofy, Minnie, Donald, Pluto and chip and dale. Honestly the food is ok but nothing extraordinary, so the cool thing about it is the chance to meet the characters and take pictures. After we ate we walked back to the hotel, stopping in a few stores in Downtown Disney. I wanted to get ears for the family and a sing book, so we could save a some time we made the purchase there. And the head back to the hotel to rest.

Donde comimos

Como estábamos cerca de Disney desde un día antes, hicimos reservación para cenar en Goofy’s Kitchen, este es un restaurant que esta dentro de Disneyland Hotel, honestamente antes de este viaje no sabia que podías comer en el restaurante del hotel sin ser huésped, esta fue una forma de preparar a Elena para lo que veríamos el siguiente día. 

Tuvimos la oportunidad de saludar a Goofy y tomarnos foto con él, Minnie, Donald y Pluto también estaban ahí. Sinceramente la comida es un bufet muy básico, pero tienes la oportunidad de saludar a los personajes y de tomarte fotos con ellos ya que van a tu mesa y no los tiene que corretear por el parque. Para regresar al hotel caminamos por Downtown Disney. Sabíamos que queríamos comprar orejas de Mickey para toda la familia y un libro de autógrafos para Elena, así que para ahorrar tiempo el día siguiente compramos las cosas ahí, y después nos fuimos al hotel a descansar.

Plaza Inn

For me breakfast is the most important meal of the day and when you have the chance to meet a few character in the process that is definitely a plus, so we made a reservation at Plaza Inn in Main Street Disneyland, where Minnie greets you and you get to take a picture with here right before you head in to the buffet, where you can find the most adorable mickey waffles, again the food is ok nothing extravagant, but we got to see a lot of characters while we were there, like Eeyore, Rafiki, Capitan Hook, a pretty random mix but it was fun.

Para mi el desayuno es la comida mas importante del día, y si eso le agregas la oportunidad de conocer unos cuantos personajes en el proceso, es un super ventaja. Así que hicimos una reservación para desayunar en el Plaza Inn en Main Street Disneyland, donde Minnie te recibe y puedes tomarte un foto con ella antes de entrar al buffet, en el cual puedes encontrar los wafles mas adorables en forma de Mickey, al igual que el otro lugar la comida no esta nada especial, pero tuvimos la oportunidad de ver varios personajes como Igor, Rafiki, capitán Garfio, una mezcla muy  aleatoria pero divertida.

Alien Pizza Planet

For Lunch, we choose something practical and easy, pizza was the perfect solution to feed a toddler with out any fuss, so after a few rides and nap we headed to Alien Pizza Planet in Tomorrowland and had lunch there.

Para la comida, decidimos que necesitamos algo practico y sencillo, así que pizza era la solución perfecta para alimentar a una niña pequeña sin tanto drama, así que después de unos cuantos paseos y una siesta nos dirigimos a Pizza Planeta en Tomorrowland y comimos ahí.

Rides and Shows

We knew this trip would be different from others. We were entirely focused on Elena and what she would enjoy. Therefore after breakfast we started our adventure  at  Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters. And lets say that this was not her favorite ride,  but she was starting to get the hang of it. We ride this first because it was closer to where we had breakfast. After that we went to It’s a Small World, this was the first ride that she really enjoyed, subsequently we took the Disneyland Railroad, Elena loves trains so this was so cool for her and we got to the main entrance without walking too much.

Sabíamos que este viaje seria diferente a otras ocasiones en las que habíamos estado en Disneyland. Porque estábamos enfocados en Elena y en que ella disfrutara lo máximo. Así que después de desayunar empezamos nuestra aventura en Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, y digamos que este no fue su paseo favorito, pero empezó a entender de que se trataba todo, fuimos primero porque era el mas cercano al lugar donde desayunamos y casi no tenía fila. De ahí nos dirigimos a It’s a Small World, este fue el primer paseo que, si disfruto. Después nos subimos al Disneyland Railroad, es un tren que te lleva de Toontown a la entrada de parque muy conveniente para descansar y no caminar tanto.

Nap time

TIP: You know your toddler, pay attention to their cues so they can enjoy the experience. For instance, Elena isn’t good at sleeping in her stroller, therefore we stopped and took her to the hotel for a nap.

CONSEJO: Tu conoces a tu hijo mejor que nadie, y para que ellos disfruten la experiencia debes de estar atento a sus señas por si están cansados, hambrientos etc. Elena nunca ha sido buena para dormir en la carriola, así que sabíamos perfectamente que para que descansara un por teníamos que llevarla al hotel a dormir un rato.

Meeting the Princesses

Moreover to have in mind is that Disney offers several show thru the park, I didn’t check that on time and we missed the opportunity to see one show with Rapunzel at that moment that was her favorite princess, but we learned and start to schedule or activities around those times, we wanted her to meet her favorite princess, so we pin mark that time in our schedule for her.

TIP: You can check in the app for the next appearance of a character, so you know where to find them.

Un punto que hay que tener en cuenta es que Disney ofrece diferentes shows alrededor del parque, yo no revise lo que tenían programado ese día con tiempo y perdimos la oportunidad de ir a un show de Rapunzel, que en ese entonces era la princesa favorita de Elena. Pero aprendimos de eso y revisamos en la app para programar nuestras actividades alrededor de los tiempos que tenían designados para que Elena conociera a Rapunzel.

CONSEJO: Puedes buscar en el app el horario de las apariciones de los personajes, para que sepas a que horas y a donde debes de ir para conocerlo.

First time meeting Mickey

We spent an important part of the day at Mickey’s Toontown. Above all we went to meet Mickey, seeing her face after she met him was priceless. It definetly made our trip. After that we went to Fantasyland to ride Dumbo the Flying Elephant, she really liked this ride too.

Una Buena parte del día la pasamos en Mickey’s Toontown, caminamos por las casas de los personajes, y fuimos conocer a Mickey. La cara de Elena cuando por fin vio a Mickey por primera vez no tiene precio, y eso hizo que viaje valiera totalmente la pena. Después de eso regresamos a Fantasyland y nos subimos a Dumbo The Flying Elephant, este también lo disfruto mucho.

Star Wars: Galxy Edge

After that we had time to kill before the parade, so we decided to go to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. To clarify we didn’t get to ride it, however we walked around and took some pictures. And it was pretty cool. Now, we can’t wait to go back with someone to take care of Elena while we ride.

Sabíamos que teníamos un poco de tiempo antes del desfile, y fuimos a conocer Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, un poco egoísta de nuestra parte, pero en nuestra defensa no nos fuimos al paseo, solo caminamos los alrededores y nos tomamos fotos, y la verdad esta muy impresionante, estamos desesperado por volver con alguien mas para que se quede con ella en lo que nosotros nos subimos.

Parade

One of the things I love the of Disneyland are the parades there are always so magical. Therefore when I heard that they had the Electrical Parade back, I was so excited. I got to see that when i was little, and now I share this with my kid made it extra special, so we looked for a spot and then sent Javier to get some popcorn. It is still as magical as I remember.

Una de las cosas que mas me gustan de Disneyland son los desfiles, son tan mágicos y especiales, y cuando vi que esa temporada tenían el Desfile de luces (Electrical Parade), no lo podía creer, porque yo vi ese desfile cuando estaba chiquita con mis papas, y ahora lo podía compartir con Elena y eso lo hizo extra especial. Así que buscamos un buen lugar para ver el desfile, Javier fue por palomitas y a ver el desfile. Sigue tan mágico como lo recordaba.

Dancing with Mickey

After the parade we needed a bathroom so we went to Tomorrowland. Right in front of Galactic grill seem like they had a little party , with a stage, Dj and the characters dancing around with the kids. Elena got to see Mickey  again and he even dance with her, my heart was so full to see her eyes light up. I looked for the name of this show and I could not find it, probably was something seasonal. But if you are there check your app to see if something comes up, it was right after the parade.

Después del desfile, desde luego necesitábamos ir al baño, así que fuimos hacia Tomorrowland. Y justo enfrente de Galactic Grill [arecia que tenian una pequeña fiesta con escenario, DJ y que varios de los personajes estaban bailando con los niños. Elena volvió a ver a Mickey he incluso el bailo con una por un momento, y yo apunto de llorar al verla tan emocionada. Traté de buscar el nombre de este show, pero no lo encontré quizá es algo de temporada. Pero si esta por ahí, revisar en tu app, quizá puedas ver algo. Vale la pena intentarlo.

Fireworks

We tried to catch the last firework show, but Elena was super tired, so we called a day, however now that I read it I feel like maybe we didn’t do much, because we were no running like crazies to get in line for the next ride like we used to do when we were there childless, but she enjoyed every second of it, she kept talking about for a few days after. So, i think it was worth it.

Después de bailar con Mickey tratamos de buscar un lugar para el ultimo show de fuegos artificiales, pero Elena ya está super cansada, así que tuvimos que irnos. Ahora que leo todo lo que hicimos siento que quizá no fue mucho, porque no andábamos corriendo como locos tratando de llegar a la siguiente fila para el otro paseo, como cuando íbamos sin niños. Pero lo importante es que Elena disfruto cada segundo, y siguió hablando de Disney por los siguientes días, así que Valió la pena.

Tips

Best time to visit

Sometimes family ask us when is the best time to go to Disneyland? or when is not to crowed it? Honestly, I think you make the perfect time. In other words, if you are waiting for it to be empty you’ll never go, august is a high season and it was ok. On the other hand we also went in a Tuesday so probably that helped a little.

Mejor época para ir a Disney

Algunas veces nuestra familia que vive lejos nos pregunta ¿cuál es el mejor momento para ir a Disney? ¿Cuándo no hay tanta gente? Y sinceramente creo que tú haces el momento perfecto, si estas esperando a que el no haya gente, nunca vas a ir. Ene nuestro caso agosto es temporada alta, y sentimos que estaba bastante razonable, quizá ayudo que fuimos en martes.

Stroller size

Check the stroller size approved by Disneyland, the have a restricted size specially for those with double strollers. It wouldn‘t be nice to get to the door and not being able to get into the park as result of your stroller being to big. Remember you can always rent a stroller inside the park as an option. For instance we used this stroller is super lightweight and not bulky.

Tamaño de tu Carriola

Revisa si el tamaño de tu carriola esta aprobado por Disneyland, tiene un tamaño determinado para las carriolas, y si no lo cumples no puedes pasar, esto es especialmente para las personas que llevan carriolas dobles. Y la verdad no es divertido llegar a la puerta y que no te dejen pasar porque tu carriola no cumple con lo establecido. Puede considerar que en el parque tiene carriolas a la renta.

Download the app before you get to the park, that way you have all your information ready. Above all make sure you download the correct app. Accidentally Javier downloaded the app for Disney World, as a result he was a little lost for a while. (love you honey)

Descarga la aplicacion de Disneyland

Asegúrate de descargar la aplicación de Disneyland antes de llegar al parque, de esa manera ya tienes toda la información que necesitas, como tus boletos disponibles rápidamente. Y revisa que la aplicación que descargas sea la correcta. Por accidente Javier descargo la App de Disney World, y digamos que por un momento estuvimos un poco perdidos.

Snacks

Everybody can get hangry waiting in line, certainly snacks are your best friends. We packed a little lunch bag with string cheese, some granola bars, pretzel chips, whatever your kid and you like, this is pretty handy and you save some money.

Botanas

En el algún momento a todo nos da hambre esperando en las filas, así que las botanas son tu mejor opción, nosotros llevamos una pequeña lonchera con, tiritas de queso, barritas de granola, pretzel, papitas, lo que sea que le guste a tu hijo y a tu. Esto es super practico y además te ahorras algo de dinero.

Weather

California is hot, however I tend to get chilly, therefore a sweatshirt and an extra clothing is a good idea. In addition, i recommend getting a hand fan with mist for when it gets hot during lines. Most importantly remember to keep yourself hydrated, we took our own water bottles and just refill inside the park. Certaintly bring your sunscreen.

Clima

California generalmente tiene un clima agradable, pero yo siempre tengo frio en las tardes, así que empaque sudaderas para todos, y un cambio de ropa extra para Elena, por cualquier contratiempo. Y para esos momentos en los que el clima esta muy caliente y estas esperando en las filas, lo mejor es llevar un abanico portátil, Y recuerda mantenerte hidratado siempre, nosotros llevamos nuestras propias botellas de agua, y solo las rellenemos en el parque. Y no olvides tu bloqueador.

Clothing

We got cute Mickey and Minnie shirts for the family, these cost like 12 dollars. But if you purchase them in the park they can cost up to 30 dollars, plus that way you get into the park already wearing some Disney magic. And remember to wear the most comfortable shoes you have.

Ropa

La cómodidad es basica, para mantener el tema del día, compramos camisetas de Minnie y Mickey para la familia. Nos costaron como 12 dólares cada una, a diferencia de comprarlas en el parque pueden llegar a costar hasta 30 dólares. Además de esta manera entras al parque listo para disfrutar, y recuerda usar los zapatos más cómodos que tengas.
